Is Riverside right for your podcast? Test the complete recording workflow

Riverside is a remote recording platform built around locally captured, separate audio and video tracks for each participant. That can protect the master files from call-quality drops, but it does not remove guest preparation, upload completion, editing or consent work. The useful question is whether one real session can move from invitation to an approved episode without a rescue operation.

Decision summary

Riverside

Riverside is worth testing for regular remote interviews that need separate tracks, transcripts and clips. Start with Free within its download and export limits. Official pricing pages and the July 2026 guide still show inconsistent plan information as checked on 2026-09-09; confirm the price and included features in your account before paying. For mainly solo work, detailed finishing or guests whose uploads you cannot supervise, compare a simpler recording and editing workflow.

Good fit

Remote interviews with separate masters

You invite guests through a browser, need an isolated file for each speaker, and want to turn the same conversation into a full episode, transcript and short clips.

Look elsewhere

A local edit suite or simple call archive

Your work is mostly solo, requires deep timeline and color finishing, or only needs a reference recording that does not justify a managed guest workflow.

Decision test

Finish one difficult two-person episode

Record 10 to 15 minutes with two people. Within your plan’s remaining allowance, wait for both uploads to finish, download the separate masters, and complete one long edit and one vertical clip. Track recovery time and check any paid export requirements before testing.

What is Riverside? Start with the local-track model

Riverside records a high-quality track locally on each participant’s device while the live conversation continues online, then uploads those files to the project. The platform can also transcribe, edit and repurpose the recording. It is closer to a remote production room than a conventional video-call recorder, and its value depends on the whole path from guest setup through final delivery. This guide is based on official documentation, not a hands-on account test. The trial below is a suggested check; account-specific checkout and export access have not been verified.

During the call

Each person records locally

The internet carries the conversation, while each supported device captures its own high-quality audio and video track for later upload.

After the call

Tracks become an editable session

Raw or aligned files, transcripts and the Riverside editor provide different routes to a finished episode or an external post-production handoff.

Where it can fail

The upload is part of recording

A clean local capture is not delivered until every participant’s track finishes uploading, so closing devices early can create recovery work.

01

How the remote interview workflow changes

  1. Uncontrolled call recording

Guests join without checking browser, microphone, storage or upload conditions.

    Managed Riverside session

The invitation includes a device check, quiet-room request, headphone rule and post-call upload instruction.

  2. Uncontrolled call recording

If the only saved file is a mixed call recording, it cannot supply the separate original tracks needed for independent repairs.

    Managed Riverside session

The call is monitored for communication while separate local tracks are retained as the production masters.

  3. Uncontrolled call recording

The host leaves as soon as the conversation ends and discovers a missing file later.

    Managed Riverside session

The session remains open until every participant shows 100% upload and the host verifies all expected tracks.

Riverside can support

  • Capture separate local audio and video tracks and provide raw or aligned files according to the participant device and recording path.
  • Turn a recorded conversation into transcript-based edits, captions, social clips and standard audio or video exports inside one service.
  • Give remote guests a browser or app joining path without requiring every participant to learn a professional desktop recorder.

Riverside cannot guarantee

  • Make a weak microphone, noisy room, poor camera, overloaded device or unprepared guest sound and look professionally directed.
  • Deliver a local master that a participant never finishes uploading, even though the live call appeared to continue normally.
  • Transfer every AI edit, overlay or added asset into an external Premiere, Final Cut Pro or AAF timeline without plan and format limits.
02

Three steps for the first useful trial

  1. 01

Prepare the guest, not only the studio

Send the supported-browser link, headphone request, microphone position, lighting note and a clear instruction to remain until the upload reaches 100%.

  2. 02

    Record a deliberately difficult sample

Use two speakers, a screen share or interruption, several minutes of conversation and the devices you will actually accept in production.

  3. 03

    Finish every intended deliverable

Download the separate tracks within the remaining allowance, finish a full edit and a vertical clip, and record correction time. Check paid export requirements first: edited TXT/SRT transcript downloads are documented for Pro, Grow, Webinar and Business, not Free.

Three Riverside terms to understand
Local track
A high-quality audio or video file captured on one participant’s device and uploaded during or after the session rather than recorded from the network call.
Aligned track
A supported export with timing padding that helps separately downloaded tracks line up in an editor. Browser video can be aligned, constant-frame-rate MP4; aligned WAV is documented for audio-only studios. Mobile and Mac app recordings do not include alignment padding.
Separate-track hours
A plan allowance for downloading individual participant masters. Riverside says session duration, not the number of people, determines the hours used.

01Choose Riverside for the separate-track workflow, not the call screen

The product’s practical advantage appears after the conversation, when each speaker can be edited independently.

Riverside says every host and guest receives a high-quality track recorded on that person’s device and uploaded during or after the session. The live internet connection still affects how participants see and hear one another, but the production master is not simply the compressed call feed. This matters when a guest briefly freezes, speakers overlap or one microphone needs different cleanup from another.

The output path depends on how the participant joined. Computer-browser video can be provided as constant-frame-rate raw or aligned MP4, while recordings from the mobile and macOS apps have device-specific limits and do not include alignment padding. Audio masters can be available as uncompressed WAV, with MP3 and enhanced variants for other jobs. Decide the accepted joining devices before recording rather than discovering the file difference in post.

  • Use the live call for conversation monitoring and the local files as the masters that enter the edit.
  • Write down whether you need raw tracks, aligned tracks, WAV audio, a finished MP4 or an external timeline.
  • Run the test with the least technical guest and weakest acceptable device, not only the host’s ideal computer.

02Use Free to prove the workflow, then verify the paid checkout

Use the remaining Free allowance for a short workflow check. It does not provide every paid export, and the official paid-plan information still needs account-level confirmation.

Riverside’s July 2026 guide describes a Free account with no time limit, unlimited recording and editing, up to 10 participants, 720p video, 44.1 kHz audio, a Riverside watermark and two one-time hours of separate audio and video track downloads. Treat those two hours as a validation budget: record a short real-format session, inspect the masters and finish the deliverables before consuming the allowance on casual tests.

The guide updated on July 17, 2026 lists Pro, Grow and Webinar at USD 29, 39 and 99 per month on monthly billing, and monthly equivalents of USD 24, 34 and 79 respectively when billed annually. These are attributed guide figures, not verified offers for your account. On 2026-09-09, the official pricing pages still contained different lineups and mixed comparison rows, including Standard. We therefore do not present a confirmed current paid price or a cheapest tier. Verify the actual charge, currency, tax, billing period, renewal and included hours in your account before purchase.

  • Keep screenshots of the checkout, billing period, renewal price, separate-track allowance and cancellation path on the purchase date.
  • A Free account is not a paid-plan trial. The official guide says no free trial is offered, while a pricing page advertises one; availability for your account remains unverified.
  • Buy only after the finished trial proves a need for 4K, watermark removal, more separate-track hours, hosting, live or webinar features.

03Treat guest readiness and 100% upload as production gates

Local recording reduces one network risk, but it shifts responsibility toward device preparation and file delivery.

For browser recording, use current Chrome or Edge on an operating system that both the browser vendor and Riverside support. Riverside’s help page still lists Windows 7+ and macOS Big Sur 11+, but those floors do not establish compatibility with current browsers. Google currently requires Windows 10+ on Intel or Windows 11+ on ARM, and macOS 13+; Edge 151 and later also require macOS 13+. Safari is limited to joining by studio link and cannot access login, dashboard or editor. Firefox, Brave and other Chromium-based alternatives are unsupported, as are Linux, ChromeOS and remote-desktop computers. Keep at least 5 GB free in the browser and check both vendors’ full requirements before inviting guests.

For a phone or tablet, use the Riverside iOS or Android app rather than a mobile browser. The current guide recommends the latest iOS, an iPhone X or newer or a 2017-or-newer iPad; Android 7 is the minimum and Android 10 or newer is recommended. Beta systems, Chromebooks and other tablets are unsupported. The separate Mac desktop app has a higher floor—macOS 15 Sequoia and Apple Silicon, with M1 or later recommended for video—so confirm every participant’s exact joining path in the five-minute check.

After recording stops, keep the studio or mobile app open until every participant’s upload is complete. Riverside’s browser guide identifies an “Uploaded” indicator; the mobile guide requires 100%. Timing depends on session length and bandwidth. Include this instruction in the invitation, repeat it before signing off, and verify that the expected camera, microphone and screen-share tracks are present before releasing the guest.

  • Schedule a five-minute device check with first-time guests and confirm the exact browser, input device, headphones and local storage.
  • Record a short backup or slate at the start so the editor can identify speakers, devices and synchronization problems quickly.
  • End the interview before the calendar slot expires, leaving protected time for uploads and any same-device recovery steps.

04Decide whether to finish in Riverside or hand off clean masters

The built-in editor offers transcript-led editing; specialist finishing may require exporting original files or a supported timeline.

Riverside’s editor combines transcript and timeline editing with cuts, rearrangement, captions, comments, overlays and AI-assisted tools. This may suit interviews centered on trimming, branding and clips. Listen to the final audio while checking caption timing, names, numbers and technical terms; an automatic transcript is not a completed accuracy check.

Edited TXT/SRT transcript downloads are documented for Pro, Grow, Webinar and Business. The exclusion concerns audio in screen shares, Media Board content and footage uploaded directly to the editor—not every external recording imported into Riverside. The editor also supports a separate workflow for uploading recordings and generating transcripts. Test the exact import and export route you need.

  • Finish inside Riverside when the job is a clean conversation, captions, layout and a small set of repeatable clips.
  • Download original masters early when color, sound design, motion graphics or complex multicamera finishing will happen elsewhere.
  • Open one exported transcript or timeline in the receiving application and verify names, timing, media links and missing effects.

05Obtain recording consent and review the AI data terms before inviting guests

A convenient guest link does not replace permission, privacy notice or a decision about AI processing.

Riverside’s terms place responsibility on the customer for rights, releases and consent covering uploaded and recorded content. Its acceptable-use policy prohibits unauthorized impersonation and non-consensual deepfakes. Tell every participant what will be recorded, where it may be published, whether clips and synthetic features are planned, and how long source files will be retained. For clients, employees, minors, health discussions or confidential work, use an approved written process rather than a casual verbal assumption.

Section 7.1 of the terms treats AI inputs and outputs as Content and permits Riverside to use them to train, fine-tune or improve its own models; third-party AI providers may not use them for their own training. The privacy policy revised June 15, 2026 also covers Content Data used for Riverside’s model improvement. Its section 11 excludes personal data of Business customers who have opted out of AI training under a written agreement; a Business subscription alone is not that agreement. Check your contract before uploading sensitive recordings. Simply not using an AI feature does not establish a training opt-out, and AI output still needs review before publication.

  • Collect permission for recording, editing, clips, distribution, voice or likeness use and any AI transformation required by the project.
  • Separate the public release from storage, transcription, model-improvement and third-party-processing decisions in the consent record.
  • When the data terms are unacceptable, use a separately approved recording and processing workflow outside Riverside; do not assume that disabling an AI feature changes the platform’s terms.

06Measure cost per accepted episode, including rescue work

A monthly subscription is cheap only when the production path repeatedly produces publishable work on schedule.

Compare costs over the same period and in the same currency. Add allocated subscription and other expenses to working hours multiplied by an hourly value. Include guest preparation, recording, recovery, editing, caption correction and external finishing; add upload waiting only to the extent it occupies working time, and track unattended waiting separately as elapsed time. Include storage costs without counting any subscription, invoice or labor item twice. Divide by completed episodes that pass your release criteria—not merely recorded sessions. Track separate-track download hours separately from money: the allowance can be exhausted while further recording remains possible. A failed upload may cost more in recovery than the difference between tiers.

Compare three complete paths using the same interview: Riverside end to end; Riverside for capture with an external editor; and the simplest call or local recorder that meets the release standard. Score guest success, master-file quality, time to first edit, correction effort, transcript usefulness, exit path, consent fit and final cost. Choose Riverside when local separate masters and repurposing remove more work than the managed session adds.

  • Use total expenses plus valued working time, divided by accepted finished episodes. With zero finished episodes, cost per episode is not calculable; do not report zero cost.
  • Count failed sessions, incomplete uploads and manual transcript repair instead of hiding them as exceptional effort.
  • Recheck the live checkout at renewal because the official plan lineup and included capacity can change independently of this article.

Frequently asked questions

What is Riverside used for?

Riverside is used to record remote podcasts, interviews, videos and live sessions with separate local tracks, then edit, transcribe, clip, export or hand those files to post-production.

Does Riverside work when the internet is poor?

Local master quality is not taken from the call stream, so a connection drop need not reduce the recorded file. The call experience and final upload still depend on the network, and every track must reach 100%.

Is Riverside free to use?

The official July 2026 guide describes Free with no time limit, unlimited recording and editing, 720p video, 44.1 kHz audio, a watermark and two one-time hours of separate-track downloads. That is a download allowance, not a two-hour limit on recording. Paid-only exports are not included in this test budget.

Which Riverside paid plan should a beginner choose?

Do not choose from a remembered table. Finish the Free test, identify the exact required hours and exports, then buy the lowest checkout tier that satisfies those verified needs.

Can Riverside recordings be edited in Premiere Pro?

Separate media can be downloaded within your plan’s allowance for manual editing. The Business timeline export transfers cuts and trims, including filler-word and pause removal, but not every AI operation, overlay or added asset. Check a sample in Premiere Pro.
